Choosing a Credit Card – Some Tips

Today, credit cards have gone beyond just a convenience – in some cases they’re actually more or less a necessity. Shopping online, renting a car, reserving a hotel room and a wide range of other things can’t be done without a credit or debit card. And the convenience that comes with credit can’t be overstated. If you’re thinking of applying for a new credit card, there are plenty of options out there. But you need to take the time to ensure you get the one that is right for you, and that’s sometimes more difficult than it seems. Luckily, keeping a few simple things in mind can help you make the right choice.

First of all, take the time to compare several cards before you apply for any of them. Look at a variety of basic issues including the interest rates, annual fees, and whether or not you’re looking at introductory offers. Be sure you understand whether or not fees and rates will change after a set period of time since many credit cards have this included as part of their offers. There are plenty of companies out there and plenty of cards to choose from, so don’t just settle on the first one you find. Review several options and get the one that works best for you.

Keep in mind as well that paying upfront fees isn’t something you should have to do for a card. Secured credit cards are different, and you will likely need to pay out a specific amount in order to get the card due to bad credit, but setup fees and other initial fees aren’t standard business practices for credit card companies. Avoid these cards at all costs, and don’t pay someone who is offering to help find you a card – they won’t do anything you can’t do on your own with relative ease.

It’s also important that you understand what applying for and being denied credit cards can do to your credit score. A few checks aren’t a big deal, but multiple credit checks within a short period of time from a variety of card issuers can actually damage your credit. Be honest with yourself – if you know you’re not likely to get approved for that platinum card, is it really worth trying to get it? If you fail the approval for one, don’t try to get a comparable one from another company. Look a little lower to keep your credit from being damaged.
