Master Card History – Credit Since the Sixties

While it’s true that credit cards and credit card companies like Master Card have become an integral part of our society, many people don’t realize that their histories can often be traced back farther than they think. In many instances, card companies have gone through numerous iterations while still providing the same basic service to consumers. While you certainly don’t need to know the history of Master Card in order to benefit from it, it’s still well worth reviewing just to understand a little bit more about the lending company that you’re doing business with. Their history goes back a bit farther than you might suspect.

Master Card got its start in 1966, but was originally called Master Charge – The Interbank Card. Several banks based in California merged to form the credit company in response to the advent of what has become today’s Visa card. The company experienced rapid growth and was eventually joined by another pair of banks in 1969, creating a major player in the world of credit cards. Finally, ten years later the company’s name was shortened to simply Master Card, and although a few minor alterations have been made to the overall name, most people still refer to it by that simple moniker.

Through the nineties and early 2000s, Master Card made several mergers with European banks to help expand into a truly global company. The name today is officially MasterCard Worldwide, and it has introduced numerous special programs and incentives to help draw in millions of consumers who use their credit cards on a regular basis. While certainly not the only card in the world, it has become one of the most recognizable and most popular, due not only to their extensive offers and features but also due to their clever ad campaigns like the now famous "priceless" ads.

If you’re even vaguely aware of finance, you at least know that Master Card exists and that millions of people use it daily. If you’ve got one in your wallet, you’re probably even more aware of the various benefits and features that the company offers to its customers. From competitive interest rates to the incredible Overwhelming Offers App, cardholders love their Master Cards and love to use them daily. Understanding their history helps understand just how they can manage to provide so many services to their customers and why they’re one of the most well-known and recognizable corporations in the entire world.
